This experience provided them with valuable learnings that go beyond the primary purpose of their Study Abroad Program C, which focused on improving English skills and understanding different varieties of English. The students had a unique opportunity to interact with “homeless” children in Cebu, which allowed for a meaningful cultural exchange, exposing them to different perspectives of life. Witnessing the poverty faced by Filipino children challenged the studentsʼ preconceived notions about poverty and happiness. The studentsʼ awareness of the importance of knowing by seeing highlights the value of empathy and understanding in a global context. This can serve as a foundation for building bridges between people from diverse backgrounds. The experience has the potential to cultivate a broader understanding of diversity, both within Japan and beyond. It prepares the students to navigate situations where individuals with different ideas and beliefs come into close contact, fostering tolerance and acceptance. Ultimately, the lessons learned from this experience can contribute to the studentsʼ ability to manage situations involving people with varying perspectives. 内容記述 | This is a discussion of an experience six students from Toyo Eiwa University had in the Philippines through their participation in a volunteer activity. This experience provided them with valuable learnings that go beyond the primary purpose of their Study Abroad Program C, which focused on improving English skills and understanding different varieties of English. The students had a unique opportunity to interact with “homeless” children in Cebu, which allowed for a meaningful cultural exchange, exposing them to different perspectives of life.
