内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 In all four countries, Japan, the United States, England, and Korea, women's colleges played an important historical role in terms of providing the sole or primary opportunity for women to obtain higher education at a time when admission to colleges and universities was not available to women on the same terms as men. In more recent years, however, a number of common developments and trends -both within higher education itself and in the larger society -have led to a questioning of the value of the continued existence of women's colleges. In the case of Japan, specifically, the continuing decline in the traditional college age group of 18-to-22-year olds, coupled with a growing preference among young women for coeducational universities, pose a major challenge to the existing 96 four-year women's colleges. At the same time, however, given the reality that gender inequality persists in nearly all spheres of life in Japanese society, there is clearly a need to provide women with the kind of education and training that will empower them to overcome barriers and to strive for greater self-fulfillment as well as more equal participation in society. On this point, there is a considerable body of research which suggests women's colleges are more successful than coeducational institutions in providing such an education.
This research project was undertaken with the purpose of re-examining what the role (s) of women's colleges and universities in Japan ought to be and the directions in which they ought to evolve in the twenty-first century. In so doing, we have taken a comparative approach and looked at issues which women's colleges and universities in the United States, England, and Korea have confronted in the past and which they confront today, as well as at some of the strategies and measures they have adopted in response to new challenges. The two researchers visited a number of women's colleges and other organizations involved in women's education in the three countries and conducted interviews with scholars, administrators, and faculty members.
As part of our research, mature women graduates from Toyo Eiwa University were asked to complete a written questionnaire which sought to elicit their evaluation of their educational experiences at Toyo Eiwa, views regarding the role of women's colleges, the merits/demerits of women's colleges, and suggestions both for facilitating and promoting participation of mature women students and also for strengthening and improving the institution as a whole.
Our discussions with leaders in the field of women's education in the three countries and the responses and comments by the graduates of Toyo Eiwa conf1.rmed our belief that as in the other societies, women's colleges and universities in Japan continue to fulfill a very important function. However, their ability to continue thriving in the face of growing competition in the marketplace of higher education for students will be dependent upon many factors. In this regard, there are many lessons that can be learned from the experiences of women's colleges in the other countries, especially the United Sates. One such lesson is
that each of the women's colleges must, f1.rst of all, reaffirm its identity, mission, and goals as an institution dedicated to the education of women. It must then design and build up an educational program that is in some way unique and distinguishing and at the same time is congruent with its mission as well as its size, resources, faculty, etc. Its unique mission and goals as well as curriculum must then be publicized and communicated, particularly to those women who share the same educational goals and interests.
This joint research project was made possible through funding generously provided by Toyo Eiwa University during the 1999-2000 and 2000-2001 academic years.
